Ballina cuts rate by one per cent, while other towns remain the same

With the new year creeping around the corner it was budget time for the local authorities in Mayo over the past week. Mayo County Council will meet this afternoon (Friday) at 2pm to finalise its budget for the next year, while the three town councils in the county have wrapped up their budget proceedings, with Ballina leading the way by cutting their rateable valuation by one per cent for 2009, and Castlebar and Westport were able to hold off any rate increase for the new year.

Lack of funding to meet housing grant applications

Members of the Westport electoral area committee were this week informed that there was not enough funding to meet this year’s Housing Aid for Older People Scheme due to inadequate funding received from the Government.

Peter Hynes informed Westport area committee members that in November last year the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food sought applications for funding for 2009, with a copy of the report circulated at the meeting.

Community effort secures Tidy Towns accolade for Westport

A jubilant crowd welcomed home the Tidy Towns committee at the Wyatt Hotel, Westport on Tuesday evening after the town notched up an impressive victory at the annual Tidy Towns Awards which were held at a gala dinner on Monday night in Dublin. Not alone did the town scoop a hat-trick this decade (2001, 2006 and 2008) in being credited with being the tidiest town in Ireland, but they also received six other awards—Ireland's Tidiest Large Town, gold medal, regional award for the recycle initiative, the Le Gaeilge award, and a regional and county medal—with the win being even sweeter this year as it is the 50th anniversary of the Tidy Towns competition.

Westport to be showcased in German film

Westport town is just one of Mayo's beautiful locations which will feature in Heart's Desire which is currently being filmed in Mayo by the German television company FFP New Media GmbH, according to Cllr Keith Martin, the Irish Film Board's Mayo liaison officer.

Changes in Leader Programme criticised

The recent announcement of over €12 million in funding under the Leader programme for the South West Development Company in Mayo was welcomed by members of the Westport Electoral Area Committe last Monday. However, committee members were informed that applications for future Leader programmes would be considered under a change in headings and that islands can’t apply any more—instead they will receive funding under a national islands programme.
